Allergic Rhinoconjunctivitis
Overview
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a growing global health concern, with prevalence rates as high as 19% in Europe. A major theme of the lecture is the "United Airways Disease", which posits that the upper and lower airways function as a single entity. Research shows that up to 90% of asthmatic patients suffer from rhinitis and the presence of rhinitis significantly contributes to asthma severity. Proper management of nasal symptoms is therefore essential for achieving total asthma control and reducing emergency room visits.
Despite its prevalence, AR is frequently neglected and undertreated. The lecture highlights the profound impact on "Quality of Life," noting that AR causes significant productivity losses - often exceeding the impact of conditions like high stress or migraines. Patients experience disruptions in social activities and personal relationships, frequently resorting to self-diagnosis and the misuse of over-the-counter nasal decongestants.
To address these challenges, guidelines such as ARIA recommend a structured approach using second-generation, non-sedating H1-antihistamines against both nasal and ocular symptoms.
